Abraham Gesner, a Canadian geologist and physician, is credited with discovering how to make kerosene from crude oil in the 1850s. He is considered the "father of the petroleum industry" for his work in developing a process to distill crude oil into various useful products, including kerosene which was used as a lamp fuel at the time.
