is called a meteor. Meteors are often referred to as shooting stars or falling stars because of the bright streak of light they create in the sky as they burn up due to friction with the atmosphere. Some meteors may also explode in a bright flash known as a fireball. When a meteor survives the journey through the atmosphere and lands on Earth, it is known as a meteorite.
