Over the course of the time periods and works we have studied this year, the idea of the monster or supernatural has evolved significantly. In William Blake's poems "The Tyger" and "The Lamb," the monster is depicted as a powerful and mysterious force of nature, embodying both fear and wonder. In Samuel Taylor Coleridge's "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," the monster takes on a more supernatural and eerie quality, with the albatross symbolizing guilt and punishment.

In Coleridge's "Kubla Khan," the monster is portrayed as a dreamlike and fantastical figure, representing the unknown and the subconscious. Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" further explores the concept of the monster, presenting it as a creation of man that ultimately turns against its creator. The monster in "Frankenstein" is not inherently evil, but is driven to violence and destruction by the mistreatment and rejection it faces from society.

Throughout these works, the idea of the monster evolves from a natural force to a supernatural being, and ultimately to a representation of human fears and anxieties. The monsters in these works serve as reflections of the darker aspects of humanity, exploring themes of guilt, power, and the consequences of playing god. As society changes and evolves, so too does our understanding of the monster and the supernatural, shifting from creatures of myth and legend to complex and nuanced figures that bring to light our deepest fears and desires.
