Why did Sherman want to use the strategy of tatal war

Sherman believed that the strategy of total war was necessary to break the will of the Confederacy and bring about a quicker end to the Civil War. By targeting not only enemy troops, but also their infrastructure and civilian population, Sherman hoped to make the cost of war too high for the South to bear, ultimately forcing them to surrender. He believed that this aggressive and brutal approach was necessary to achieve victory and prevent the war from dragging on indefinitely.
