WASHINGTON, D.C. -- At a speech to Marines at Camp Lejune in North Carolina, President Barack Obama said he plans to withdraw most U.S. troops from Iraq by the end of August 2010.

Approximately 40,000 troops would remain in Iraq, however, but would be gradually withdrawn by December 31, 2011, a deadline set under an agreement between the Bush administration and the Iraqi government last year.

"Let me say this as plainly as I can: By August 31, 2010, our combat mission in Iraq will end," Obama said to cheering Marines. "By any measure, this has already been a long war, and it is time to bring our troops home with the honor they have earned."
