The idea for International Mother Language Day came from Bangladesh. It was first proposed by Rafiqul Islam, a Bangladeshi student, in 1949 and later gained international recognition when UNESCO declared February 21st as International Mother Language Day in 1999. This day is observed to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and to raise awareness about the importance of preserving and promoting mother languages.
