Plants have chloroplasts because they are able to carry out photosynthesis, a process that converts sunlight into energy in the form of glucose. This is essential for the plant's survival and growth. Animal cells, on the other hand, do not perform photosynthesis as they obtain their energy through consumption of other organisms. Therefore, animal cells do not have the organelle chloroplast.
