An autosome is a chromosome that is not a sex chromosome. In humans, autosomes are the first 22 pairs of chromosomes out of a total of 23 pairs. They contain genes that are responsible for determining most of an individual's traits and characteristics, excluding those related to sex. Autosomes are inherited in pairs, with one copy received from each parent.
