The Maya understood the concept of zero (or null) before Europeans did. Maya glyphs depicting the concept of zero have been found in ancient Mayan inscriptions dating back to the 4th century BC. This was long before Europeans began using the concept of zero in mathematical calculations, which didn't become widespread in Europe until the Middle Ages.
