The Pope called for a crusade in order to retake Jerusalem and the Holy Land from Muslim control. This was seen as a holy war to protect Christianity and reclaim significant religious sites. The First Crusade was launched in 1095 by Pope Urban II in response to a request for military aid from the Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos, who was facing Muslim invasions.
