A karyotype is the complete set of chromosomes of an individual. This is a picture of the human chromosomes and as expected there are 46 chromosomes. The number of chromosomes in human cells is 46 with 22 autosomal pairs, one of each from the mother and one of each from the father, and 2 sex chromosomes Females have 2 X chromosomes and males have an X and a Y chromosome. The only human cells that do not contain pairs of chromosomes are reproductive cells, or gametes, which carry just one copy of each chromosome. This image is called a karyogram. A karyogram allows a geneticist to determine a person's karyotype: a pictorial representation of their chromosomes.
