Vegetative state

A vegetative state, also known as a persistent vegetative state, is a condition in which a person is awake but shows no signs of awareness or responsiveness. Individuals in a vegetative state are typically able to breathe on their own and may exhibit some reflexive actions, such as eye movements or facial expressions, but do not demonstrate any purposeful behaviors or responses to stimuli. This state is typically caused by severe brain damage or injury, such as a traumatic brain injury, stroke, or lack of oxygen to the brain. Treatment and prognosis for individuals in a vegetative state can vary, and decisions about care and quality of life for these patients may be complex and ethically challenging.
