Jimmy Carter's political career began in the 1960s when he served as a Georgia State Senator. He ran for Governor of Georgia in 1970 and won, serving as Governor from 1971 to 1975. He then ran for President in 1976 and won, serving as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981. After leaving office, Carter remained active in politics and in various humanitarian efforts.
