Helping Hands

Are you cool under pressure? Are you passionate about making things better for others? Are you the kind of person who is not afraid to step up when everyone else is stepping out? If so, then there is a chance that helping others is what you were meant to do. The clusters we learned about in this unit highlighted careers of those who dedicate their lives to helping others.

For this activity, pick out a career to research from each of the clusters in our unit. You might decide to look at a military career, a firefighter, or a hairdresser. Search online to see if you can find an example of someone who works in this chosen career. As you read or listen to their experiences, see if they explain what made them choose the career they did, what some of their everyday tasks are, and how they feel about their career.

Now head back over to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook and do some more research on the three careers you researched. When you get to a career’s page, look especially at the sections “What _____s Do” and “How to Become a _______.”

Careers such as these take self-sacrifice but fulfill a vital need for our communities. Your assignment is to create a video advertisement featuring the three careers you learned about. Make your advertisement positive and exciting so that it will attract those who may not have considered looking at these career clusters. Help your viewers to see how important these jobs are and how fulfilling they can be.

In your video, you can include shots of people working in these careers, interviews with professionals in the field, and maybe even some statistics or facts about the demand for these jobs. You can also get creative with animations, text overlays, and music to make your advertisement engaging and informative.

Remember to consider your audience when creating your video. Think about what might appeal to younger students who are still exploring career options, or to adults who might be considering a career change. Highlight the positive aspects of each career, such as the sense of purpose, the opportunity to help others, and the potential for growth and advancement.

Once you have finished creating your video, share it with your classmates or friends to get their feedback. You can also consider sharing it on social media or with your school’s career center to inspire others to consider these important and fulfilling career paths.

By creating a video advertisement for careers in the helping hands cluster, you can raise awareness about the importance of these roles in our society and inspire others to consider making a difference through their work. So get out there, grab your camera or phone, and start filming!
