Each state has two senators in order to ensure equal representation in the Senate, regardless of the state's population. This was a compromise reached during the Constitutional Convention of 1787, when smaller states were concerned about being overshadowed by larger states with more representatives in the House of Representatives. The two senators per state rule was put in place to give each state, regardless of size, an equal voice and representation in the national government.
