Carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin in red blood cells with a much greater affinity than oxygen does. This prevents oxygen from binding to hemoglobin, resulting in decreased oxygen transport to cells. Without sufficient oxygen, cellular respiration cannot occur properly, leading to cellular damage and ultimately death.
