How are polyps and corals related?

Polyps and corals are closely related as polyps are the individual organisms that make up a coral reef. Corals are colonies of polyps that are connected by a limestone skeleton, forming the colorful and diverse structures that we commonly think of as coral reefs. Each polyp secretes a calcium carbonate exoskeleton which contributes to the overall structure of the reef. Therefore, corals are made up of numerous polyps working together in a symbiotic relationship to create the vibrant and complex ecosystems that are essential to marine biodiversity.
