The formidable question addressed in each of these congressional acts was the issue of slavery and its expansion into newly acquired or organized territories. The Missouri Compromise dealt with the admission of new states and whether they would be slave or free, the Compromise of 1850 addressed the status of slavery in newly acquired territories from the Mexican-American War, and the Kansas-Nebraska Act allowed for popular sovereignty in determining the status of slavery in those territories.
