• Learners consistently fail to adhere to punctuality norms in the school environment, which can create a domino effect in the classroom. Such factors disrupt the flow of lessons, impact the learning environment of the class, and affect their learning and that of their peers.

• Some teachers do not prepare before class, so you will find that instead of teaching, they chat, or along the way, their story ends, and learners start being disruptive.

One of the teachers also shared the following.
• I think pinching is a constant thing in township schools. You will yell at them, and in most cases, you find that yelling does not work anymore. They laugh at you, so you resort to a little pinching here and there to threaten them. When it comes to problematic learners, you will resort to chasing them out. I think this practice is slowly becoming a constant reality In my school and in the school where I did my teaching practice, it was the norm. I am using it, too, though I know it is not right. That is the only way I can teach.
Task
Discuss how you would address this in your groups based on SA's education legislation and constitution. And what can be a role of an curriculum coordinator?
Focus on SA's education sections

In South Africa, the Constitution and education legislation clearly outline the rights of learners and the responsibilities of teachers in creating a safe and conducive learning environment. The use of physical punishment such as pinching is prohibited in schools, as it goes against the rights of learners to be free from violence and abuse.

In addressing punctuality issues, teachers can work with the school management and parents to reinforce the importance of punctuality and set clear consequences for tardiness. Establishing routines and procedures for the beginning of the school day can also help learners understand the expectations and value of being on time.

Regarding teachers who do not prepare for class and resort to inappropriate behavior like chatting instead of teaching or using physical punishment, the curriculum coordinator plays a crucial role in providing support and guidance. The curriculum coordinator can organize professional development sessions for teachers on effective lesson planning and classroom management strategies. They can also facilitate discussions on appropriate disciplinary measures that align with the Constitution and education legislation.

It is important for the curriculum coordinator to create a culture of accountability and continuous improvement within the school, where teachers are encouraged to reflect on their practice and seek help when needed. By promoting a collaborative and supportive environment, the curriculum coordinator can help teachers adopt positive and effective teaching practices that benefit both learners and educators.
