• Learners consistently fail to adhere to punctuality norms in the school environment, which can create a domino effect in the classroom. Such factors disrupt the flow of lessons, impact the learning environment of the class, and affect their learning and that of their peers.

• Some teachers do not prepare before class, so you will find that instead of teaching, they chat, or along the way, their story ends, and learners start being disruptive.

One of the teachers also shared the following.
• I think pinching is a constant thing in township schools. You will yell at them, and in most cases, you find that yelling does not work anymore. They laugh at you, so you resort to a little pinching here and there to threaten them. When it comes to problematic learners, you will resort to chasing them out. I think this practice is slowly becoming a constant reality In my school and in the school where I did my teaching practice, it was the norm. I am using it, too, though I know it is not right. That is the only way I can teach.
Task
Discuss how you would address this based on SA's education legislation and constitution. And what can be a role of an academic dean?

Addressing the issues of punctuality and lack of preparation among teachers in the school environment should be approached in line with South Africa's education legislation and constitution, which emphasizes the rights of learners to a quality education in a safe and conducive learning environment.

Punctuality norms should be clearly communicated to learners and enforced consistently by the school administration in accordance with the school's code of conduct. Teachers should be held accountable for their punctuality and preparedness for class, with support provided to help them meet these expectations. Professional development opportunities can be offered to teachers to improve time management skills and lesson planning.

In terms of learner discipline, it is important to adhere to the principles of restorative justice and positive discipline practices as outlined in South Africa's constitution. Physical punishment, such as pinching or chasing learners out of the classroom, is prohibited and goes against the learner's right to dignity and a safe learning environment. Teachers should instead use effective classroom management strategies, such as positive reinforcement, setting clear expectations, and providing support to learners who may be struggling behaviorally.

An academic dean can play a crucial role in addressing these issues by providing leadership and support to teachers in implementing inclusive and effective teaching practices. The academic dean can offer training and resources to help teachers improve their classroom management skills, provide guidance on creating engaging and interactive lessons, and facilitate discussions on creating a positive school culture based on respect and collaboration.

Ultimately, by promoting a culture of respect, accountability, and continuous improvement within the school environment, educators can create a more positive and conducive learning environment for all learners to thrive.
