King was seen as more palatable to white Americans and was able to work with white allies, while Malcolm X's militancy and rhetoric made him viewed as a threat to many. This led to King being more widely accepted and supported by mainstream society, including government officials and the media, while Malcolm X was often portrayed as a militant extremist.
