In normal years, the trade winsd cause colder, nutirent-rich waters to rise to the surface. This process is called “upwelling.” When the cold water rises, it suports a tiny fish called plankton, which feds all kinds of larger fish species. During El Niño years, however, due to changes in presure and the directiion of trade winds, the sirface layer of warm watter is thicker and prevents thet usual upwelling.
