In class today, we've examined one aspect of the Freedmen’s Bureau: its goal to provide

land for freedmen so that they could be economically independent of white Southerners.

Using evidence from the documents examined in class, describe which
statement below best describes the Freedmen’s Bureau’s success:

1. The Freedmen’s Bureau was successful in providing land to freedmen for
the purpose of making them economically independent.

OR

2. The Freedmen’s Bureau was not successful in providing land to freedmen
for the purpose of making them economically independent.

This should be in the form of a paragrph (4-5 sentences)

Based on the evidence examined in class, it can be concluded that the Freedmen's Bureau was not successful in providing land to freedmen for the purpose of making them economically independent. Documents highlighting the challenges faced by the Bureau in acquiring and distributing land, as well as the opposition from white Southerners who wanted to maintain control over the freedmen's labor, suggest that the Bureau's efforts were largely unsuccessful. Freedmen continued to struggle economically and faced numerous barriers in accessing land and achieving true independence from their former owners. Overall, the evidence points towards the failure of the Freedmen's Bureau in fulfilling its goal of providing land for freedmen to achieve economic independence.
