Sound waves are mechanical waves because they require a medium, such as air, water, or solids, to travel through. Sound waves are created by the vibration of particles in the medium and travel as a series of compressions and rarefactions. In contrast, electromagnetic waves do not require a medium to travel through and can propagate through a vacuum, such as light waves.
