Diego Velázquez auditioned for the role of King Philip's court painter by painting a portrait of the king himself. King Philip was so impressed with Velázquez's work that he appointed him as the court painter in 1623. This marked the beginning of Velázquez's successful career as one of the most renowned painters of the Spanish Golden Age.
