Prevailing winds are caused by the differential heating of the Earth's surface by the sun. As warm air rises at the equator and cool air sinks at the poles, a pressure difference is created, leading to the movement of air from high pressure to low pressure areas. This movement of air results in the formation of prevailing winds, which then push surface ocean waters in the direction of the wind, creating ocean currents.
