Following Muhammad's death, a split occurred within the Muslim community between two factions: the Sunni and Shia. The Sunni believed that leadership should pass to the most capable individual, while the Shia believed that leadership should remain within the Prophet's family, specifically through his cousin and son-in-law, Ali. This split created lasting divisions within Islam that continue to influence beliefs and practices to this day.
