Douglas McArthur *

Douglas MacArthur (1880-1964) was an American general and Field Marshal of the Philippine Army who played a prominent role in the Pacific theater during World War II. He is best known for his leadership during the Battle of Bataan and the subsequent defense of the Philippines against Japanese forces. MacArthur also led the successful Allied island-hopping campaign in the Pacific and oversaw the occupation of Japan after the war. He is remembered for his iconic phrase "I shall return," which he famously uttered before leaving the Philippines and fulfilling his promise by returning to liberate the country in 1944.
