Choose from:

• New York Conspiracy of 1741
• German Coast Uprising of 1811

The German Coast Uprising of 1811 was a slave rebellion that took place in Louisiana. It was led by Charles Deslondes, a slave overseer who was of mixed race. The rebellion began on January 8, 1811, and over the course of two days, around 500 enslaved individuals rose up against their oppressors. They marched towards New Orleans, armed with whatever weapons they could gather, including axes, cane knives, and guns. Despite their initial success in taking control of plantations and killing some white inhabitants, the rebellion was ultimately crushed by the superior firepower of the white militia.

The group of enslaved individuals rebelled in response to the brutal conditions they faced on the plantations, including harsh treatment, long hours of labor, and lack of freedom. They were inspired by the ideals of the French Revolution and the Haitian Revolution, seeking to gain their own freedom from slavery. While the rebellion was unsuccessful in achieving its goal of liberation, it did have a significant impact on the history of slavery in the United States. The uprising led to stricter slave codes and increased fear among white slaveowners, resulting in even harsher treatment of the enslaved population. The German Coast Uprising of 1811 serves as a reminder of the resistance and resilience of enslaved individuals in the face of oppression.
