Enslaving the Indigenous peoples of the Americas was largely unsuccessful in filling the need of the plantations because they were not accustomed to the harsh labor demands and harsh treatment they faced. According to Las Casas, some Indigenous people would rather die by their own hand than continue to suffer under the cruel conditions of slavery. Furthermore, Las Casas describes how the population of Indigenous peoples rapidly declined due to the harsh treatment, diseases, and harsh working conditions they faced on the plantations. This ultimately led to the failure of using Indigenous peoples as slaves to meet the demands of the plantations.
