Two of the most well-known explorers who explored land that is now occupied by Canada are Jacques Cartier and Samuel de Champlain. Cartier explored the St. Lawrence River and claimed what is now Quebec for France, while Champlain established the first permanent French settlement in North America at Quebec City.
