The threshold potential is the membrane potential that must be reached in order for an action potential to be generated. It is usually around -55 to -40 millivolts in most neurons. Once the threshold potential is reached, voltage-gated sodium channels open, allowing sodium ions to rush into the cell and depolarize the membrane, leading to the initiation of an action potential.
