The energy we get from food initially comes from the sun. Plants harness the energy from sunlight through the process of photosynthesis, converting it into chemical energy that is stored in organic compounds. Animals then consume these plants or other animals that have consumed plants, transferring this energy up the food chain. Ultimately, all energy in food can be traced back to the sun.
