Why did Alexander the second get rid of surfs through emancipation?

Alexander II, the Tsar of Russia, implemented the emancipation of the serfs in 1861 in order to modernize the country and address the increasing social unrest caused by the harsh conditions and exploitation of the serfs. The emancipation was also seen as a way to strengthen the economy and create a more stable and productive workforce.

By freeing the serfs and granting them more rights and freedoms, Alexander II hoped to create a more just and equitable society and promote social and economic progress in Russia. The emancipation of the serfs was seen as a necessary step towards modernization and industrialization, as well as a way to improve the overall well-being of the Russian people.
