Before it became a national park, Lihué Calel was an indigenous reserve owned by the Mapuche people. The reserve was known for its cultural and historical significance to the Mapuche community in Argentina. After it was declared a national park in 1977, the administration and management of Lihué Calel National Park was entrusted to the National Parks Administration (Administración de Parques Nacionales) of Argentina.
