Southerners made the complaint or accusation that William Lloyd Garrison, a prominent abolitionist, influenced and radicalized Nat Turner, a slave who led a rebellion in Virginia in 1831. They claimed that Garrison's strong and vocal opposition to slavery and his writings in his newspaper, The Liberator, helped to incite Turner's violent uprising.
