Executive Order 9066 was a presidential executive order signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on February 19, 1942, during World War II. It authorized the forced evacuation and internment of Japanese Americans living on the West Coast of the United States. The order primarily targeted individuals of Japanese descent, including both American citizens and resident aliens, and led to the incarceration of around 120,000 Japanese Americans in internment camps, such as the one depicted in the memoir "Farewell to Manzanar" by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston and James D. Houston. The order was later ruled as unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in 1944, but the internment of Japanese Americans continued until the end of the war.
