The Gift

"I got something for you, Kasia. I think these are the mittens and the scarf you really liked," Anne said, feeling excited, and handed her friend a velvety-green woolen scarf and mittens.
"Oh, you shouldn't have," Kasia said to Anne, sounding surprised.
"Don't you like them?" Anne had to ask.
"Yes. Of course I do. You should not have spent the money, though," Kasia responded, with hesitation. She almost took the woolen gift out of the gift bag and put it in her yellow purse but stopped herself. She twirled the scarf around her fingers and looked at her friend as if she could not find the right words to express herself.
*Why not? I only had to spend $10. They were on sale!
That was only two hours of my work at the mall," Anne said, trying to figure out why her sweet gesture would make Kasia uncomfortable.
"That is exactly why I say you should not have," Kasia finally spoke her mind, left the gift stranded on the floor, and stormed out of the room. She walked so fast that her lemon-colored dress seemed to float in the wind.
Kasia had left Anne wondering about the sudden outburst. Anne kept trying to recall why her friend of seven years refused a nice gift. After all, green is her favorite color, I think, Anne thought to herself and picked up the scarf and the mittens from the floor. Right as she was walking out the door and approaching the hallway, Anne heard sobs that sounded familiar.
Kasia finally spoke her mind, left the gift stranded on the floor, and stormed out of the room.
