During the years between 1860 and 1900, Texas farmers had two main reasons to grow more cotton. First, they saw other states, like Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia, doing well with cotton farming, so they wanted to be successful too. Second, new inventions, like the cotton gin and the expansion of railroads, made it easier for Texas farmers to grow, harvest, and transport their cotton, encouraging them to produce more. These outside and inside developments motivated Texas farmers to rapidly increase their cotton production.
