The use of the Santa Fe Trail declined in the late 1860s with the completion of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway, which provided a faster and more efficient means of transportation between Missouri and Santa Fe. Additionally, the outbreak of the American Civil War disrupted trade along the trail and further diminished its importance.
