The 1906 Atlanta Race Massacre, also known as the Atlanta Race Riot, was a violent outbreak of racial tension and hostility that occurred in Atlanta, Georgia, in September 1906. The catalyst for the event was a series of false accusations against African Americans of assaulting white women. Fueled by sensationalized newspaper reports and growing racial tensions, a white mob formed and began attacking black residents and businesses in Atlanta's African American neighborhoods. The violence lasted for several days and resulted in the deaths of at least 25 African Americans, as well as the destruction of numerous black-owned businesses and homes. The event showcased the prevailing racism and discrimination against African Americans during that time period and highlighted the urgent need for racial equality and justice.
