The crusade that was organized in 1189 to recapture Jerusalem after it fell to Saladin was known as the Third Crusade. This crusade was led by European leaders such as Richard the Lionheart of England, Philip II of France, and Frederick Barbarossa of the Holy Roman Empire. Although they were not successful in fully retaking Jerusalem, this crusade did lead to the signing of a peace treaty between Richard and Saladin, allowing Christian pilgrims to visit Jerusalem.
