Question 4 (2 points)

For a chemical reaction to occur, the bonds holding the atoms of the reactants must be broken. This requires an input of energy, so breaking bonds is an endothermic process. The atoms of the reactants will then rearrange and form new bonds, creating the products. The formation of bonds in the new products releases energy, so this is an exothermic process.

Look at the chemical reaction above. For each substance in the reaction, decide if bonds are breaking or forming.

Column A
1.
Cu(OH)2

:
Cu(OH)2

2.
CuSO4

:
CuSO4

3.
NaOH

:
NaOH

4.
Na2SO4

:
Na2SO4

Column B
a.This substance is a product in the reaction, so bonds were formed and energy was released.
b.This substance is a reactant in the reaction, so bonds were broken and energy was absorbed.

Column A

1. Cu(OH)2: Bonds are broken
2. CuSO4: Bonds are broken
3. NaOH: Bonds are broken
4. Na2SO4: Bonds are broken

Column B
a. Cu(OH)2: Bonds were formed and energy was released
b. CuSO4: Bonds were formed and energy was released
c. NaOH: Bonds were formed and energy was released
d. Na2SO4: Bonds were formed and energy was released
