This order includes a wide range of insects, including aphids, cicadas, leafhoppers, planthoppers, scale insects, and bed bugs, among others. Hemipterans are characterized by their specialized mouthparts, called a proboscis, which is used to pierce and suck fluids from plants, animals, or other insects. They have incomplete metamorphosis, with nymphs resembling small versions of adults but lacking wings. Hemiptera is one of the largest insect orders, containing over 80,000 known species.
