The result of seafloor spreading is the formation of new oceanic crust. As tectonic plates move apart at mid-ocean ridges, molten rock called magma rises to the surface and solidifies, creating new crust. Over time, this process causes the seafloor to spread out and the ocean basins to widen. This process also contributes to the movement and shifting of continents.
