The event that caused four additional southern states to secede from the Union was the attack on Fort Sumter. After the Confederate forces bombarded and captured Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina, on April 12, 1861, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Arkansas also seceded, joining the original seven southern states that had already seceded.
