Henry VIII came into conflict with the pope because he wanted to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon in order to marry Anne Boleyn. The pope, however, refused to grant the annulment as it went against the Catholic Church's teachings on marriage. This conflict ultimately led Henry VIII to break away from the Catholic Church and establish the Church of England, with himself as the head.
