The ruler who was most responsible for uniting Greece and building an empire was Philip II of Macedon. He came to power in 359 BCE and began a series of military campaigns to conquer and unite the Greek city-states under his rule. Philip II strategically used diplomacy, military tactics, and political maneuvering to gain control over various Greek territories. His most significant achievement was the establishment of the League of Corinth in 337 BCE, which brought together most of the Greek city-states under Macedonian leadership. This unity facilitated the eventual rise of his son, Alexander the Great, who would go on to expand the Macedonian Empire across much of the known world. Thus, while Alexander is often credited with the empire's vast expansion, it was Philip II's foundation that enabled its creation.
