In Chapter 5 of "The Martian," titled "Log Entry: Sol 14," Mark Watney's survival on Mars is compromised after an unexpected accident occurs during a sandstorm. While conducting an EVA (Extravehicular Activity) to investigate the communication antenna, the storm intensifies suddenly, resulting in the MAV (Mars Ascent Vehicle) being toppled and destroyed by a piece of flying debris. The antenna punctures Mark's suit and tears through his bio-monitor on his side, causing him to lose consciousness. Despite being temporarily unconscious, the telemetry data logged by his suit reveals that his vital signs are still active. Thus, Mark's survival is severely compromised as he is now stranded on Mars without a functioning habitat or a viable means to leave the planet.
