As a child, Mae Jemison dreamed of traveling to outer space. She was inspired by Sally Ride’s groundbreaking trip into space as the first female astronaut. Jemison pursued this lifelong dream of hers. In 1992 she boarded the Endeavour space shuttle. This made her the first female Black American astronaut to go into space!

Today, Dr. Jemison continues to advance technology and to serve as a role model for many people. Jemison is iconic in the areas of gender and race, especially in the field of science. She has earned numerous awards, worked with various scientific organizations, and made many public appearances to promote science and technology in education. These accomplishments are a testament to her commitment to this work.
